Prevention Using Inhalers
What is an inhaler?
An inhaler is a device that delivers medicine directly to the lungs to help manage asthma. It’s the most common and effective way to treat asthma symptoms. Each type of inhaler serves a different purpose.
Types of Inhalers
Reliver Inhaler
Reliever inhalers provide quick relief during an asthma attack. They relax the muscles around your airways, helping them open up so you can breathe more easily. These are used when you’re experiencing shortness of breath or wheezing.
Preventer Inhaler
Preventer inhalers are used every day to keep asthma under control. They reduce inflammation in your airways and help lower the chance of having symptoms in the first place. They don’t work right away, but they help over time when used regularly—usually twice a day or as prescribed.
There are several types of inhalers, each with a specific purpose:
Long-Acting Bronchodilators
Long-acting bronchodilators help relax the airway muscles for up to 12 hours. These are often used daily to keep asthma symptoms in check.
Combination Inhalers
Combination inhalers include both a preventer medicine and a long-acting bronchodilator. They’re helpful if using just a preventer isn’t enough, or if managing multiple inhalers is difficult.
